1 Listen to the melody

2 Which melody did you hear?

★★★

Great ears!

You got 7 out of 8 melodies right.

How to Play

  1. Pick a string (G, D, A or E) and a tempo, then tap Play the melody.
  2. You'll hear a one-bar metronome count-in, then a short phrase using that string's open, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th finger notes, with its own mix of rhythms.
  3. Look at the three piano-roll style options below — each block's position shows pitch, its width shows rhythm — and pick the one that matches what you heard.
  4. Get instant feedback, then the game moves straight on to the next round.

Why This Game Helps

Melody Ears is a free violin ear training game that brings pitch and rhythm together in one phrase, building on the separate skills trained in Aria's earlier games. It's music ear training and aural training in one: students learn to hold a short first-position melody in their head — both what the notes are and how long they last — which is exactly what's needed for playing by ear, tuning accurately and eventually sight-reading with confidence.
